Congratulations to the newest CAL FIRE air tanker pilot, Boyd Willat!
“Mr. Willat is the fifth air tanker pilot that has completed the training in 2020,” said Jeff Cavarra, CAL FIRE program director. “It is a testament to the efforts of the DI Air Tanker Instructor pilots as well as the significant fire activity that we have seen this year.”
“In what is clearly a violation of the uniform standards, Mr. Willat received the traditional retardant shower,” added Cavarra. “He received his Initial Attack Air Tanker card from CAL FIRE Chief of Aviation Dennis Brown.”
Those certified as an Initial Attack Rated Air Tanker Captain can, if needed, assess and drop on fires even if no other aerial supervision is available on the fire. DI has provided fixed-wing pilots and mechanical staff for fixed wing and rotary aircraft for the State of California’s aerial firefighting program since 2001.
